The Glen Ridge Historical Society is proud to partner with the Glen Ridge High School History Club to bring to our town a wonderful night of New Jersey history. American Revolutionary and New Jersey icon William Livingston will be historically portrayed and discuss his lifetime of achievements in New Jersey.

More Information:

Born in New York (1723) William Livingston, a graduate of Yale, went into law, but after years In New York politics, he and his family moved to Elizabethtown, NJ where they built an estate (Liberty Hall). Returned to politics by the Revolutionary War, he was a member of the first and second Continental Congresses. In 1776, he left Congress to command the New Jersey militia, and later that year he was elected the first governor of the State of New Jersey. Livingston spurred New Jersey’s rapid ratification of the Constitution, conducted agricultural experiments, and was also active in the anti-slavery movement.
